Anyone who has ever arrived at JFK International Airport in Queens has noticed bland square shaped airline terminal buildings with one trendy exception at Terminal 5. Sticking out above the rest it gives off an air of the futuristic, even though it made its debut in 1962. Designed by Finnish architect, Eero Saarinen, the TWA building, also fondly called the “Mushroom Building, “due to its simple and structural curves similar to wild mushrooms in a field.
This terminal was innovative not only in design but was the first airline terminal to have closed circuit television, a central P/A system, baggage carousels, and an electronic schedule board. The interior had wide glass windows and departing passengers would walk to planes through round, red-carpeted tubes. It was a far different structure than ever seen in the city that has seen it all.
After attempts to find a tenant after TWA´s bankruptcy in 2001, the building for the most part has remained vacant. However, it did achieve status and was nominated to National Trust for Historic Preservation's list of the 11 Most Endangered Places in America.
The terminal was used as a backdrop in numerous films including two with Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Aviator" and "Catch Me If You Can."
Current news states that the dormant terminal may get a new lease on life by being converted to a boutique hotel complete with restaurants and shops. Only time will tell if this idea goes through and the Mushroom will be in use once more.
